Working through writers block

As the title says, I have writer’s block and have it bad

Which couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

Regulars here would naturally say, but Reilly, you’ve written three posts in the past two weeks. New posts for the first time in months!

You got me!

I’m yet another creative person who is a master procrastinator.

In this case…

This writing block is with English class homework. Ever since the election, I haven’t been able to do much of the work.

I’ll be okay as long as I do this week’s homework, the last weekly coursework, and the final paper. Two mini-assignments are course assessments, but those will be easy.

Update since I started this post

I completed 70 percent of my homework for the week. And I completed the introduction section of the essay paper.

Sometimes I wish that I didn’t have ADHD and autistic special interests because it makes projects like this harder than it would be for a neurotypical person. But I do and can’t do anything about it.

On Whedon, and narcissism

I’m frustrated at myself because I chose the thesis topic: Joss Whedon is not a feminist, and is a narcissist. It’s relevant to this English class due to us using the TV show Firefly as the subject matter for the quarter.

Joss Whedon is the creator of this TV show. For those who don’t know, he has a controversial past claiming for a long time that he was a Feminist and an ally. In 2017 this began to fall apart after his ex-wife wrote a blog post for The Wrap dot com that told the world about all his affairs and cheating during their marriage. Included in this piece were multiple direct quotes from Whedon justifying his fucked up behavior. Behavior that’s logical to a Narcissist, and abusive to others.

Logical in the clinical understanding of narcissism. Things considered logical by a narcissist are mentally ill by a healthy person.

A timeline of Whedon’s abuse:

This paper has been difficult for me to write because it is emotionally hard to read about abuse accounts and narcissism. I’ve been anxious because past trauma is triggered. Part of my therapy journey was studying narcissism and similar conditions to heal that part of me that was hurt by others who are or have too many negative traits associated with it.

Six days remain in the quarter.

  2. It’s tough when you have so much going on and end up experiencing writers block. I think more than procrastinating it can also be that we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and end up having anxiety about actually doing the thing. I’m glad your update says you were able to do a lot of your work. And the essay sounds very interesting. Good luck with the rest of it.

    1. Hey Pooja, good to see you! Yes, procrastinating is a bad habit that I have, and creates problems way too often. I think in retrospect with this situation, it was a mix of that and chronic health issues I’ve had recently. I was able to complete the essay, with some changes to make it easier to finish and from time constraints. I’ll find out the grade soon, but I feel confident about its quality. Having help from my writer-mother while editing made a big difference too.
